Class Assignment - 2
This page contains six images shot around London this week. Throughout this time, I have explored the practice of making images in pairs, commonly referred to as diptychs. I hope you enjoy, and feel free to message me your thoughts on the work.
[note: these images are separate work made for class purposes; the work I am doing on Regent's Canal is shot on medium format film and, as a result, cannot be processed or shared until I return to the States in August.]

Austin, your photos are really beautiful! I like the one with the rope the best. I think they all have a really strong sense of balance
ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely lovely! By far, my favorite is of the person's rear dressed in all white. The frame is filled quite nicely here. The expression in his hips was beautifully captured. I also find the stillness of the water in the image with the green boat very calming.
ReplyDeleteSome feedback I can offer here is varying the depth of your images could help to diversify your class portfolio. It seems to me that they all have about the same focal length. I remember you had a fixed 50mm at Highgate. Is this the only lens you brought on the trip?
Hi Austin!
ReplyDeleteYour photos look great! I especially enjoy the last three. The first one (of the last three, or is it easier to say your 4th photo) has a continuity, or a repetitive pattern that is pleasing to the eye. The 5th and 6th have nice contrasting colors and the frame is filled very well.
My first instinct was to critique your 3rd image with the boat as there seems to be an abundance of negative space, but the more I look at it, the more I think that it works for the scene. The amount of tranquil, reflective water calms the viewer.
I know the assignment was to originally offer tips and critiques, but Austin I think your work looks great! I am not sure what tips I have to offer you! :)
Austin,
ReplyDeleteYou have some really good shots here! Your best in my opinion are the second and fourth images. Both have dynamic compositions while being totally different and it’s fantastic. The lines in the fourth image have me shook!
The fifth image feels a little flat to me which may have been improved by adjusting the focal length as jasmine had mention, or maybe if the composition was altered slightly?
All in all great body of work so far and I’m just mad we can’t see what you’ve done on film yet!
Great shooting, Austin.
ReplyDeleteYou're focusing on formal elements here, but my guess (based in part on the interviews you've posted) is that you're deeply interested in the unique experiences of those living (literally) on the canal, and I'd love to see a bit more of sense of individual expression mixed in here - perhaps portraits of people on their boats and/or some wider shots with more environmental context. What I personally love most about these canal boats is how people make them into homes by adding flower pots, deck chairs, artwork, pets and other personal touches. I'd love to see some photographs that explore how boats reflect their individual owners, as well as those that capture the lifestyle and day-to-day leisure or work activities of the occupants - and perhaps some of the logistics involved in navigating the canals, etc. ... but I also appreciate the more formalist images you're capturing here; they are quite lovely!
