Regent's Canal - 1
A canal is an artificially constructed waterway made for the passage of boats, and even ships, inland. The purpose of most canals within the United States, and even North America, is to assist in commerce and trade of the surrounding areas through the transportation of goods. However, in London, and most of the UK and European cities I would assume, canals are mainly used to transport people instead of product. When people begin to interact with an environment, culture and community is often formed. In Regent's Canal today, as I photographed various scenes, I felt as if I may have found a subject worthy of more attention during my time in the city. For now, I will be focusing on photographing the culture and community of the canals of London. As more posts appear, there will be few images. I will not be able to process the images until I return to the United States. The stories of people, places, and scenes, however, will be shared regularly. Enjoy.
Along the Canal, I met a middle aged man by the name of Dennis. We chatted for a bit about traveling, his life in the Netherlands, and his most recent criminal offense, which, in the United States, would have been considered a case of personal defense. Currently, he is visiting a friend in Camden Town, and is living on her boat until he returns to the Netherlands. When I asked him about her life on the Canal, he said "She seems to enjoy it. I mean, she can ride up and down, wherever she likes, so thats gotta be nice." He smoked as we talked and eventually began packing. I moved on and continued to walk the canal.
On the tube, at the Angel stop near the canal, I found many writings on pink and yellow sticky notes. The details of the notes seemed to be descriptions of "schmucks" as one note stated, and include phrases such as: "my suit is too big for my whiskey", "Ryans Hair- skilled and arch... unsettlingly sexy", and "so much suit, so much eyeballs; it was tense and perfect". One of the notes contained information on the possible author. Hopefully I am able to track them down.
That is all for now.
